Friends and Neighbors of Pleasantville

Pleasantville is a thriving little community with a diverse assortment of mythical creatures, monsters, yokai, cryptids, and just about anything else that could be classified as "spooky" or "creepy". It's a cozy place where everyone knows each other and talk of a new neighbor is very exciting- which sucks if you're Jill and hate being the center of attention. Here's a few friendly faces who you might see during your stay in Pleasantville.

Chuck

Chuck

A burly minotaur covered in shaggy fur, Chuck is a strong but silent figure who roams the boarders of Pleasantville. Every day, no matter the time or weather, you can see him lumbering around the fields. He serves as the town's protector and is quite good at his job. With a large set of horns and his favorite weapons slung on his back...whatever lurks outside the town knows better than to disturb the peace.

Maximus "Max" Litchfield and Giles Barberini

Max Giles

Two animal hybrid, mythical, cousins who live in the village. They are polar opposites of each other and very much have a "Drake and Josh" dynamic; they're just two goofballs who happen to stumble into trouble.

Max is a loud mouthed, vulgar, party animal of a Satyr who never left his frat days behind him. He owns a club in the local cemetery that everyone knows as the "Raveyard". In a sea of dancers, lights, and music, he can usually be found sandwiched between his two greatest loves; booze and women. Max claims to be a real smooth talker the ladies can't resist, but he's struck out more than he cares to admit. He likes to push Giles' into stepping out of his comfort zone and let loose in the club. The poor guy needs more excitement in his life.

Giles, compared to his loud and abrasive cousin, is more soft spoken and reserved for a Fawn (a creature similar to Satyrs). He’s the head librarian of the local library, enjoying every minute of silence and reading every old, dusty, book the building has to offer. Giles and Jill are good friends; they enjoy talking about their favorite authors and are even avid members of the Pleasantville Book Club. Giles sees Max as the brother he never had, but wishes he'd slow down and take better care of himself- all of that booze and sex is going to catch up to him one day.

Gideon Griff

Gideon

A restless griffin who was something of an outcast in his flock. He was inquisitive and chatty much to the ire of his elders, spent more time examining prey than eating it, and only terrorized trespassers to lock them in the longest conversation of their lives. He left the flock when he was old enough to find his own territory and eventually ended up in Pleasantville. After seeing that the townsfolk had no reliable news source, he decided to start his own newspaper with a small group of locals and has been working hard to help the community ever since. He shows the mannerisms of both birds and cats and can suddenly become distracted at any given moment, mostly by sparkling objects, small animals, sudden movements, and lazar pointers. One look is all it takes to get the griffon absorbed and running off.

Hermes

hermes

A juvenile dragon who comes from a land people doubt the existence of. Hermes came to Pleasantville the same way everyone else did; he just kind of wandered in one day and didn't feel like leaving. Something about the size of the village and the sense of community really made the young drake interested in learning more and wanting to get involved. Dragons are introverted by nature so seeing people get together, host events, and just stop to talk on the side of road awakened some kind unnatural curiosity in him. Because of this, Hermes is currently the only dragon living in Pleasantville.

Easygoing and quite chipper. His soft, rounded, features, goofy smile, and baby face make him one of the more easily approchable villagers. With his natural sense of direction and ability to fly long distances, Hermes works for Gideon as a paperboy. It's a job he enjoys and it gives him the added opportunity to chat with everyone he passes. While diligent with his deliveries, he's a bit...scatterbrained when he has nothing to do; tripping over his scarf while walking, knocking over things with his wings and tail, not paying attention to his surroundings, the guy's an absolute mess when he isn't focused. The poor thing means well but the path of destruction that follows him tells a different story.

The Kappa Family

kappas

A large family unit of duck-like creatures. The Kappas are a hardworking group that operate the local spa/bath house located next door to their neighbors, the inn run by the Tanuki Family. They're known for their friendly service, warm atmosphere, and complimentary cucumbers. Though they are always busy with running a business, they're still Yokai at heart and thus, they love playing the occasional prank on other family members and even customers. The pranks in question are always super harmless and cause no damage to the participants, their health, or their property. Pictured here are Kiso (left), his wife Iliamna (right), and their daughter Ibi (middle).

All kappas are named after the ponds and rivers from their country of origin.

*A quick lesson on sexual dimorphism with kappas: Much like real world ducks, male kappas tend to have brighter, more intricate, plumage while the ladies have duller, more muddled, colors. Kappa chicks however (ducklings? kappalings?) have down that can range from yellow to brown regardless of gender. As they age and lose their baby fluff, their adult plumage will start to form. Kiso's design is loosely based on a Falcated duck while Saru's is based off a common Mallard.

The Tanuki Family

tanuki

A large family unit of racoon dog-like creatures who reside in Pleasantville. The Tanuki are a hardworking group who own the local inn located near their neighbors, the spa house run by the Kappa family. The inn is known for its homey atmosphere, warm hospitality, and extensive bar area. Though they are a busy bunch with a lot to manage, they're still Yokai at heart and love to play pranks on each other and their guests. The pranks in question are always super harmless and cause no damage to the participants, their health, or their property. Tanuki are best known for their shapeshifting magic and illusion based trickery, often incorporating these into their pranks. Taking your eyes off your luggage for even a moment could lead to it mysteriously disappearing. Pictured here is Nopporo, the eldest son of the previous owner- Ohdai.

All Tanuki are named after the forests and mountains from their country of origin.

The Shisa

shisa

Guardian creatures who are closely related to lion dogs, the Shisa can be found all over Pleasantville. During the day, they roam the outskirts of the village with Chuck but at night you'll find them at their posts around town, protecting the oldest and most important buildings from evil spirits. There are quite a few of these guys around Pleasantville, standing guard and doing their best to protect Pleasantville from whatever could possibly harm it. Chuck greatly appreciates their help, even if their puppy-like energy and roughhousing quickly gets on his nerves.

Pictured here is a young Shisa pup named "Muppet".

Isadore Gottfried

isadore

Head bartender and owner of the local bar, Witch’s Brew. Isadore is a vampire, a creature of the night known to thrive on the consumption of blood. A flirtatious busybody who happens to be a hit with the customers, he enjoys his job and the gossip that comes with being in a building full of tipsy creatures who trust him with their deepest secrets. Don't be fooled by his charms, he's been known to use the drunken ramblings of his customers against them in one way or another and he always does it with a glowing smile. Despite looking very young, he’s actually over 1,000 years old. Isadore has seen a lot in his long life and has the knowledge and experience to show for it; war and peace, laws being created and dismantled, the growth of cities, modern medicine, and advances in technology-he could talk your ear off for hours. While he’s aware of how important humans are to vampire society, Isadore is rather indifferent of them and sees humans as careless, parasitic, destructive, and idiotic.

Isadore is one of the few residents of Pleasantville who knows Jill is actually human. He likes to hang it over her head and try to blackmail some blood out of her.

Currently in a very casual, friends-with-benefits, relationship with Amber- one of Maximus’ dancers. They both have a very specific itch to scratch and Amber is more than happy to give up a little of her blood for some lust in return.

Amber

amber

An exotic dancer at the local club, "The Raveyard". Amber is a succubus, a demonic creature with alluring aura and a craving for lust- which she gets plenty of on stage and off the clock. She's a promiscuous gal known for her other worldly beauty; her hair and skin are flawless and her wardrobe is filled with the latest fashions. If the sea of desperate suitors fighting for her attention are anything to go by, Amber's magnetism is quite powerful- even if she's aware that most of the attention is superficial. Because of this, she cherishes the rare times when somebody is unaffected by her influence and just treats her like a normal person. She loves to meet up with her other succubus friends to gossip about their latest escapades in the dating scene, get trashed on some cheap wine, and maybe watch a bad rom-com.

Another villager who ends up becoming close friends with Jill due to Amber thinking the town's newest resident is also a succubus. She loves to drag the poor, unfortunate, nerd to her girl's night hangouts.

Amber is currently in a super casual, friends-with-benefits, relationship with Isadore- the town's local bartender and bachelor on the prowl. While she has an ever rotating list of men (and a few women) to leech love and intimacy from, she looks forward to the attention and company she gets from Isadore the most.

Dr. Franklin Jekyll and Plague Nurse

doctor nurse

Pleasantville's best (and only) healthcare professionals. While they are valued members of the town it doesn't stop the other residents from being...uncomfortable in their presence.

There's a mystery surrounding these two everyone has their own questions about. Pleasantville didn't always have a clinic- or a decent doctor for that matter- so Frank appearing when he did and seemingly materializing a building out of thin air was only the start of this rabbit hole. Soon, strange things...well, stranger things by the town's standards, began happening. Dr. Jekyll doesn't bother to keep his more concerning interests of vivisection and cadavers to himself during check-ups, often filling every room he enters with dread as he makes any excuse imaginable to keep his patients around a little longer. Some people have even claimed that they saw him digging up graves in the dead of night. Or that on some nights- especially during storms- you can hear him wildly cackling from the clinic. And while his assistant, Plague Nurse, is far more approachable and has proper bedside manner, she still comes with her own odd aura and unanswered questions.

What even is she?

Has anyone ever seen her without her mask?

Where did she come from?

Nobody remembers her being there the day the clinic first opened, so the whole town is convinced that Dr. Jekyll stitched her together and brought her to life through unknown means. Or that she's some kind of demon bound to servitude. Or a disfigured curse victim he took pity on.

Whatever the case and whoever they are, the vibes are always off and it doesn't help that the duo can't keep their public displays of affection behind closed doors, but if anyone in Pleasantville has any kind of a medical emergency...they don't have any other options.

wolf

Not a neighbor, but one night Jill saw some kind of dog out on the outskirts of town. She tried to approch it to see if it was lost or needed help but it ran off into the woods pretty quickly. She didn't have her phone on her at the time so she had the make a quick little sketch of it. It's probably nothing to worry about!
